Auditions

The LPYO is pleased to offer an opportunity to be a part of this community’s youth orchestra. The LPYO is available for those advanced students who are from 7th grade to 12th grade. Youth Orchestra will meet once a week on Sunday afternoons from 3:30pm to 6:30pm, at Texas A&M International University’s Music Building.
In order to become part of this organization, there will be an audition that must be prepared for. Based on the audition results, it will determine whether or not there would be admittance into the orchestra. If you or your child would like to audition and be a part of the Laredo Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, please email Mr. Teniente
Joining LPYO is a great way to meet other string players in the community, make new friends, and create wonderful memories, while improving your skills on your instrument and performing fun, and challenging music. Considering that the orchestra will only meet once a week, it is imperative that there will be a commitment to practicing the music and attend all rehearsals and performances. Once admitted to the LPYO, there is a one time small tuition fee of $30 for the school year. There are scholarship for students who need financial assistance.

Audition Preparation Tips
1. Try to find a GOOD recording of the songs. YouTube is our friend!
Here is the link to Carnival of the Animals
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE4CATvZ188&list=PL5EDDC3CD0593C9E0
2. Go over the music without playing first. Read it and ANALYZE it. (Figure out the Key signature, Time Signature, accidentals, fingerings, bows etc…)
3. Practice SLOWLY-then gradually get pick up the tempo
4. Practice the tough spots and BE CONSISTENT! (The goal is to play something 3 or more times in a row perfectly and without stopping)
 5. Practice performing-Perform for your parents or friends WITHOUT STOPPING (The more you practice performing the easier it will get each time) Playing for friends and family is great, because they only want you to succeed. So don’t hesitate asking them to listen to you…especially if you are the type who gets nervous.
 6. If you get nervous, try to keep a steady beat. Sometimes when we get nervous we tend to rush. Before you play an excerpt sing it in your head!!!
 7. When auditioning or performing in a competition, remember that it is not about winning or losing, but about the EXPERIENCE. If you had a good experience, then keep doing what you are doing. If you had a negative experience, ask yourself… “What did I learn? What should I do differently next time? How can I improve?” These were just some helpful tips that could help you in your audition. There are many other ways that can help you, so go on-line and look for more!
